GLOSSARY OF RADIO TERMS
Auto Acknowledge
Every time the radio is called, the radio sends back a
verification that the call has been received.
Audio Clarity
The noise cancelling microphones and "Tailored
Response" loudspeakers fitted as standard with Motorola
Radios provide greater speech clarity when used in high noise
environments. In addition to this, the volume of the tones
produced by the radio can be adjusted to suit your working
environment.
Base Call
A single push of the Base call button can automatically connect
you to your office or supervisor....it's that easy!
Battery Saver
Minimises power consumption for extra talk-time and assures you
adequate battery power each and every time you need it.
Call Barring
The radios can be programmed to prevent the user from making
certain types of call, for example telephone calls, or the keypad
may be locked to prevent any numbers being 'dialled' from the
keypad. With the keypad locked, calls can only be made from the
short form dial list or the Base call button. This provides
greater financial control and prevents the user being busy with
unauthorised calls.
Call Control
Calls can only be made from the pre-programmed dedicated call
list or from the dedicated call buttons. This provides greater
financial control, and prevents the user being busy with
unauthorised calls.
Call Diversion
Allows you to divert all incoming calls. No need to miss a call
because you are away from your radio.
Call
Duration Timer
Every time your conversation begins, a call timer in the display
lets you know how long youve been speaking for. A tone is
also sounded to warn you that 10 seconds of the call remains.
Call In Absence
If an individual call is received and not answered, the radio
will store and display the identity of the calling party. On
return to the radio, audible and visual Call in absence alerts
are given. This simple paging system avoids the frustration of
continuously trying to get hold of someone when their radio is
unattended.
Conventional
Mode (Trunked Radios)
PL channels can be pre-programmed into the radio in addition to
the trunking operation.
CTCSS
(Private Line)
A simple tone system that minimises disturbance from cochineal
sharers, as only calls intended for your group are heard. This
greatly reduces operator fatigue and confusion arising from
irrelevant messages. The Private Line (PL) tone can be different
on each channel, giving extra communications flexibility.
Dedicated Call
A single push of the dedicated call button can automatically
connect you to your office.
Dedicated
Call Buttons
Each of the mobiles have up to four dedicated call buttons. A
single push of one of these buttons can automatically connect you
to pre-stored radio, status or telephone numbers.
Display/LCD
Display
Leading edge LCD technology is available in the radio display
featuring the widest viewing angles and the best contrast for the
whole variety of different lighting situations. A backlit display
clearly indicates Mulitcall address, Status level and operating
channel, whilst symbols show the operating mode of the radio.
DTMF Encode
Provides ability for interconnection to PABX/PSTN telephone
systems.
DTMF
With the keypad models of Motorola Radios and an appropriate
infrastructure, it's possible to access telephone systems, thus
creating your own communication network between your fixed phones
and mobile radio users.
DUPLEX
Means two frequency working i.e. separate frequencies for transmit and receive. Semi duplex means that the radio can only talk or listen at any one time, unlike a telephone which is full duplex. See SIMPLEX.
Emergency
The radio has the ability to be programmed to respond to
emergency situations to protect the user. The radio can also be
fitted with a user specified hidden microphone.
Enhanced Audio
A built in noise cancelling microphone reduces background noise
to provide clear intelligible transmissions.
External
Call Alert
This facility is ideal for people working in the vicinity of
their vehicle. When the radio is fitted with the appropriate
hardware, an incoming call will trigger the vehicles horn
or lights thus alerting the user.
Fleet Call
Scroll through the full fleet and group range, and make a call to
any selected user or group by pressing the 'push to talk' button.
Flexible
Channel Plan
Allows a non contiguous channel plan to be programmed into the
radio for trunked operation.
Fully
Synthesised
Allows your local Authorised Motorola Radius Dealer to quickly
programme frequency and Private Line characteristics. This
provides off the shelf delivery and reduced down time, keeping
your radio system flexible so that it can continue to meet your
changing communication needs.
ID Display
When an individual call is received, the radio displays the
identity of the calling unit. This visual information about who
is calling greatly enhances the simplicity of the communication
system, and saves time on each conversation.
Ignition Sense
The Motorola mobile radios can be wired so as to be activated by
the vehicle ignition switch so that there is no risk of a
"flat" battery if the vehicle is unused for long
periods.
Incoming ID
Display
A two digit ID appears in the display to reveal who is calling
you before you answer.
Internal
Voice Operated Transmit (VOX)
Activated by low cost headsets for true hands free operation.
Rather than adding VOX electronics into every accessory you buy,
it is already built into the radio for added reliability.
Internal
Loudspeaker
A front facing internal loudspeaker provides clear reception, and
simplifies installation.
IP54
IP54 is a European standard that assures protection against shock
vibration, dust and rain ingress.
Keypad Dialling
The Trunked radios can make keypad dialled calls to any permitted
destination and can also make 'tone overdial' calls into services
such as Voice mail and advanced telephone facilities.
Keypad Lock
The keypad may be locked to prevent any numbers being
dialled from the keypad. With the keypad locked,
calls can only be made from either the stored number memory or
one of the dedicated call keys. This provides a level of
operational control so that radios may be restricted to prevent
unauthorised calls.
Keypad Edit
After dialling a number, errors can be easily corrected by
pressing the edit key.
Last Number
Re-dial
The last number called can be recalled by simply double pressing
the 'push to talk' button, saving time when repeatedly calling
the same destination.
LCD Display (see display)
Local Area
Operation
Improved interference protection for congested urban use, giving
clearer reception with less chance of "garbled"
messages. Programmable per channel.
LED Display
The two digit green LED display clearly shows operating channel
number and scan list details. Three coloured LED's indicate
channel monitor, scan and transmit modes.
Low
Battery Warning
An audible and visual low battery warning is given when the
battery voltage falls below a pre-set level, allowing the user to
change or recharge batteries before communication is lost.
Microphones
A range of microphones are available for portable and mobile
radios to enhance day to day operation, for example a noise
cancelling microphones fitted with portables and mobiles provide
greater speech clarity when used in high noise environments.
MIL STD 810C,
D& E
Tough U.S. Military standards that ensure a high level of
protection against shock vibration, dust and rain ingress.
Multicall/Group
Call
The radio is capable as standard of using the Motorola Select 5
signalling schemes and can either make individual calls or group
calls to other users.
Multicall
Keypad
Provides individual calling of a Select 5 radio without
disturbing others within your system. As easy as using a
telephone!
Multiple
Personalities
The radios can work on up to four different networks giving
greater flexibility of coverage. The same function can be used to
extend the stored number lists and the number of dedicated calls
available in the radio for use on one network.
Network Check
Each time a radio is switched on, it automatically self checks
and then confirms that the network is operational and in range.
Network
Operation
Motorola Trunked radios contain powerful software that works away
in the background to ensure that the radios always select the
best channel for your call. Motorola technology also provides the
most sensitive receivers, together these two features ensure that
you always get the best speech quality and reduced interference.
Power Switching
The GP300/GP600/GP900/GP1200 portable has the capability to
switch between high power for maximum range and low power for
battery saving.
Priority Calls
Where permitted the GM600/GM1200 can make High Priority and
Emergency calls, this facility can be triggered by a dedicated
button on the radio, by a foot switch or other external device.
This means that emergency calls can be easily made and will be
routed ahead of other routine traffic on the network.
Priority
Channel Scan
User-programmable Priority Channel Scan gives the radio operator
the ability to programme a list of channels to be scanned, from
the keypad. Two channels of increased importance, for example a
security and Community Repeater channel, may be designated as
priority 1 and priority 2 channels within the scan list, and
monitored more frequently.
Private Line (see CTCSS)
Private
Line Lockout
Prevents both transmission on a busy channel and reception of
unauthorised transmissions, keeping lines of communication clear,
ideal for Community Repeater operation where wide area coverage
is important.
Programmable
Channel Spacing
You can now operate between systems with different channel
bandwidths without having to change the radio or compromise on
performance.
Programmable
Power Levels
So that the users can fully tailor the radio to their requirement
the power levels within the radio are programmable.
Programming
Users can have the capability to program or re-program user
facilities such as dial lists using a simple, easy to understand
graphical program running on a standard PC. Motorola have
designed this software to provide maximum flexibility for users
without the risk of important network features being accidentally
changed.
Remote Mount
Kit
Where space is at a premium, or where security is important, the
control head of the radio can be mounted under, over, or on the
dash of your vehicle, whilst the transceiver itself is remotely
installed out of sight in the boot or under a seat.
Scan
The user can program a series of channels into predefined scan
lists. Channels can also have priority levels assigned to them.
This means that important messages can be received even if the
user is engaged on another conversation.
Scan
Nuisance Channel Delete
When irrelevant conversations on a "nuisance" channel
tie up your radios scan feature, you can temporarily remove
this channel from the scan list at the press of a button.
Select 5
Signalling
Individual or designated group calling provides more efficient
communications. All six major European signalling formats (ZVEI,
CCIR, 70ms CCIR, EEA, French ZVEI, Modified ZVEI) are
programmable. Select 5 Encode/Decode is available with PL
Encode/Decode, allowing individual calling when using Community
Repeater operation. A calling tone is automatically emitted from
the radio of the person you wish to call alerting them to respond
to the call. Other radio users on your system will not hear the
tone and therefore will not be disturbed.
Stored number recall/Shortform dialling
There is no need to use the keypad to dial frequently called
numbers. Up to 40 stored radio, status. PABX or PSTN numbers can
be recalled using a simple quick dial feature. Just select the
number or name you require by scrolling through the stored list,
and send the call by pressing the push to talk button.
Selective
And Fleet Calling
All versions of the Motorola Trunked radios can make a complete
range of calls available on the network, including individual and
group calls to other radios and calls to the telephone network.
Selective
Calling
In the same way as a pager operates, you can contact either
specific groups or an individual whilst screening the message
from others in the system.
SIMPLEX
The radio is single frequency operation for both transmit and receive.
Status Calls
Pre-programmed messages can be sent by the radio, eliminating the
need for speech calls for frequently used messages.
Stored
Number Recall
Up to 11 stored radio, status, or telephone numbers can be
recalled using a simple quick dial feature. Just select the
number you require by scrolling through the stored list, and send
the call by pressing the 'push to talk' button.
Storing
Of Partially Dialled Numbers
Any number entered via the keypad but not dialled is temporarily
stored by the radio.
Stun/Unstun
This useful feature allows stolen radios to be rendered unusable.
Switchable
Channel Spacing
A useful feature for all users who need to change from between
25kHz, 20kHz and 12.5kHz systems. All channel spacings are
programmable on a per channel basis. This feature can also be
used to link in one radio two previously incompatible systems
such as Marine and Land based systems.
System Wide
Calls
Important system wide calls can be received informing the radio
operator of system shut downs etc.
Time-Out Timer
Transmissions are terminated after a pre-programmed interval, and
a warning tone is produced for as long as the PTT is depressed.
Trunked
Or Conventional Operation
The Motorola Trunked radios can also be programmed to work in
conventional radio systems for easy integration and operation
with existing radio systems.
Unattended
Operation
No need to miss a call because you are away from your radio. The
Motorola Trunked radio continues to monitor the radio channels
for calls. Incoming calls can be stored and recalled later when
the operator returns. This simple paging system avoids the
frustration of continuously trying to get hold of someone when
their radio is unattended
Unit
Identification (ANI) With Status
Provides numeric display of calling portable on the display of
the Desktop Controller. Seeing who is calling saves time,
especially in larger systems or where priority messages are
important. Using the keypad, the radio operator may vary a status
message contained within the identification signal.
