WHAT ARE SHORT RANGE BUSINESS RADIOS?
Motorola launched Great Britains first low-cost two-way radio for business use in January 1996. The radio is designed to capitalise on moves by the Government to free up additional radio airwaves and make this cost-effective method of communication easily available to businesses in Great Britain. Named Handie-Com, the new radio from Motorola is simple to operate and license.
Two-way radio has always offered a practical and cost-effective means of short range communication, particularly since users incur no monthly running costs. Its potential has, however, been limited by the availability of airwaves and by relatively complex and costly licensing requirements (£140 a year for up to ten radios). Now the Government has freed up an additional range of radio frequencies (Short Range Business Radio) for business use.
The launch of Short Range Business Radio was initiated by an industry group led by Motorola. The group worked closely with the Radio Communications Agency (RA), an executive department of the DTI which manages the radio spectrum. The RA has developed a low-cost licence at a price of £30 for three years for unlimited hand-sets to encourage business use.
Handie-Com by Motorola, the first low-cost radio to capitalise on this move, has been launched after 12 months research and development. With models available at a price of £169 (exc. VAT) per hand-set, it is approximately half the price of current radios on the market and will be available, complete with user friendly licence application form, from retail outlets throughout the UK. Previously, radios and licences have generally only been available from specialist outlets, licence forms have been complex to complete, and licences sometimes only available after a lengthy waiting time.
Taking advantage of new regulations which allow nation-wide use (previously the majority of licence holders were only permitted to use their radios in one location), Handie-Com can be licensed for use anywhere in England, Scotland and Wales, and can be used for local communication (up to one mile depending on terrain) in open country or built-up environment.
Simple to operate. Handie-Com is ideal for any type of business which needs to communicate locally across a location, and which needs a system which is cost effective, not only to run but to operate. Once purchased, there are no additional monthly costs. Also, the instant nature of the communication, and the fact that it can be person-to-person, or among a group of people, make it ideal for communicating with a team on a site.
Two-way radio is already widely used in Great Britain as a method of person-to-person voice communication. It can commonly be seen in use by the police forces and the security industry. Previously, however, two-way radio has not been widely used by businesses as a whole. There are two main reasons for this:
( The cost vs. the benefits have not been obvious to many businesses)
( Licenses have been relatively complex and costly to obtain)
Each person in the team has a handset. A button is pressed to talk and released to listen. It is as simple as that. Any number of people in a team can have a handset. Team members just need to be in earshot of the radio, listen out for messages which are for them, and respond as necessary by first pressing the transmission button.
